Marle Hall is an outdoor learning center owned by Warwickshire County Council. It’s provided thousands of children across the county a priceless opportunity to go on a residential trip to Snowdonia National Park with their friends.
Sadly, it’s due to close its doors on Friday 22nd October. The county council hasn’t invested in the facility or promoted its brilliant work, and now it states the costs are unsustainable.
Many parents, teachers, and support staff are now concerned that some of our children will miss out on experiencing adventures that can’t happen in the classroom. These are outdoor experiences that help children find new strengths and confidence in themselves.
We all know that schools are under serious financial pressure. Many parents and carers are experiencing immense financial stress amid a cost-of-living crisis. It will be impossible for many of them to fund enriching outdoor experiences.
But there is still a way we can make sure all our children and young people are given the opportunities they deserve.
Last week, I asked Warwickshire County Council to investigate setting up a charitable trust fund, administered by a board that would operate independently from the Council. The money injected into this fund should be equivalent to the profits from the sale of Marle Hall and used to provide bursaries and subsidise experiences for schools and children who need that extra financial support.
The motion wasn’t supported by Conservative Councillors, but I am taking this agenda forward. I’m now part of Warwickshire’s Outdoor Education Task and Finish Group, and I will keep you up to date on any progress.
Watch the video (below) to see me explain to full Council why residential experiences are crucial opportunities that are investments into our children’s futures, and not luxurious extras:
